Finding Grace in a Time of Chaos

During this time of apparent social, political, and interpersonal chaos, so many are overwhelmed by the ongoing national and international conflicts and the almost endless argumentative and divisive exercises we engage in.

Part of the problem is human beings only see what’s in front of their faces. In this relative world we live, with the physiology we occupy, we are limited in perception and understanding. It’s like we only see less than a grain of sand in all the vast possible volume of sand in the whole world.

We live within boxes of beliefs and philosophies that become our truths, until we evolve beyond the capacity of one box and move into a new and more expanded box. Step by step, humans and the entire creation are inherently designed to grow and evolve. That’s the DNA of God’s creation. We sometimes fight against that because we get too comfortable living within our own box and resist change. And we think our box is the truth and others must surely be wrong if they are living in a different box. And sometimes we are just afraid to step into the evolutionary unknown.

But when we start to be pressed closer and closer to the edges of the box (as we are always naturally moving in that direction of continuing and relentless evolution, whether we are aware of it or not), the longer we resist allowing ourselves to step outside the old box and embrace the new expanding possibilities, the more we suffer. I love the old Star Trek line, “Resistance is futile!” Only in this case, evolution ultimately wins out and no amount of resistance will ever overcome that natural law of the creation.

Years ago, when I suddenly went through my own death process in a hospital following major surgery, I had the opportunity to experience a different kind of perception, one that transcended the only physical structures of perception I had known and lived with in my daily life. Once the body stopped running, so did any sense of the “normal” perception processes I was formerly familiar with. It was replaced with a new kind of perception as I moved forward deeper and deeper into the unfolding transitioning journey before me.

No longer bound by the old limited style of perception, I was able to experience an expanded field of creation, before unknown to me. One that I realized went way beyond, yet not separate from the more dense aspects of our worldly existence. (Like two sides of a coin, each side appearing to be distinctly different than the other. But turn the coin edgewise and notice that there is something in between the two sides that gives rise to, supports and sustains both sides—thus, the two sides uniquely exist but are inseparable from each other and from the underlying essence that both sides exist within.)

The ease and grace of this style of perception allowed me to understand how we are all eternally connected to one another and to every possible particle of the entire field of creation—from the most densely defined worldly existence to the finest most sublime beginning particles of the universe and beyond.

So while we are debating and arguing over personal and political opinions, as well as all the other seemingly endless points of contention we may have with one another, it can be helpful to realize that we are operating within a limited system of perception and understanding. Furthermore, the more we resist and cling to our boxes and demand that others live within our boxes, the more division and suffering we will experience.

Human evolution of consciousness is simply part of the blueprint of God’s design. It is the fuel that keeps the creation from becoming stagnant and dying—no matter what we may think or say about it! In reality, it is a perfect and beautiful design. So perhaps we can take a piece of popular biblical advise when engaging in conversation regarding opposing opinions, as we walk amid the landscape of an almost unlimited field of individual boxes: “Give Grace…”
